US State Department: We consider Greek Patriarchate ecumenical

The U.S. State Department said on Monday that Washington considers the Fener Greek Orthodox Patriarchate in Istanbul as "ecumenical" and Patriarch Bartholomeos as "a religious leader of global standing."

At a U.S. State Department news briefing, a Greek journalist asked about the State Department's position pertaining to the Fener Greek Orthodox Patriarchate. The department later issued a written statement in response.

The statement was published on behalf of State Department spokesman Sean McCormack, and said that the U.S. views Bartholomew as a religious leader of global standing.

"The U.S. takes very seriously the issue of religious freedom in Turkey, as illustrated in the 2005 International Religious Freedom Report," the statement reads. "Among specific concerns highlighted in the report are issues related to the Ecumenical Patriarchate, including the reopening of the Halki Seminary, as well as issues related to other religious minorities in Turkey."

The State Department statement further said the U.S. has consistently raised concerns regarding the "Ecumenical Patriarchate" with Turkish authorities at the highest levels for many years, and noted President George W. Bush's urging Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan to reopen the Halki Seminary during their meeting this past June. The statement underlined that Under Secretary of State Karen Hughes also discussed this issue with Patriarch Bartholomeos during her visit to Istanbul in September.

The secular state of Turkey does not recognize the global status of the Fener Greek Orthodox Patriarchate, and stresses that such an "ecumenical" claim contradicts with the Treaty of Lausanne -- the founding agreement of the Turkish Republic. Turkey views the Patriarch as the spiritual leader of Turkey's Greek Orthodox community.
